Garden Design Project · Malahide, Co. Dublin
When our clients in Malahide approached us, their back garden faced a common urban challenge: a towering, imposing back wall that dominated the view, paired with standard, uninspiring fencing. They needed a functional, luxurious escape. Our mission was to transform this blank slate into a multi-tier, low-maintenance masterpiece designed for both relaxation and high-end entertaining. It was one of several multi-level transformations we’ve completed across Dublin — you can explore more in our recent garden design projects.
Overcoming the Imposing Scale
To minimise the impact of the massive back wall, we designed a clever multi-tier garden layout. We constructed a striking raised bed at the rear, planting an elegant olive tree as a central anchor. To completely elevate the boundary lines, we replaced the bog-standard fencing with premium, horizontal tongue-and-groove fence panels — instantly elongating the space and adding a clean, contemporary architectural backdrop.
Zoned for Luxury Living
We established multiple seating areas across the layout, allowing the homeowners to chase the sun or seek comfortable shade at any time of day:
The Dining Zone
A spacious upper terrace features sleek outdoor porcelain tiling, perfectly hosting a large sectional sofa and a fire pit table for year-round entertaining.
The Focal Point
Integrated seamlessly into the design is custom composite deck seating. We installed subtle strip lighting underneath the bench, turning this feature into a glowing architectural focal point visible right from the kitchen window.
The Lounge Zone
A cosy swing chair sits on a separate paved terrace, offering a quiet, private escape away from the main entertaining space.
Low-Maintenance, High-Impact
Between the porcelain terraces lies a pristine, mud-free artificial lawn requiring zero mowing. We curated a selection of low-maintenance, evergreen planting nestled in deep mulch beds to ensure year-round structure without the weekend chore list. Finally, strategically placed warm lighting highlights the plant textures, pathways, and seating elements, turning this Malahide garden into a magical evening retreat.
The Result
What began as an overlooked, wall-dominated yard is now a fully zoned outdoor living space that works from morning coffee to late-evening entertaining. The multi-tier layout draws the eye away from the boundary and outward across the garden, while the porcelain, composite and artificial lawn finishes mean the owners spend their weekends enjoying the space rather than maintaining it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a multi-tier garden design cost in Dublin?
Every garden is priced individually based on size, levels, materials and access. Multi-tier designs like this Malahide project involve groundworks, raised beds and premium finishes, so we provide a detailed quote after an on-site consultation. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation estimate.
Is artificial grass really low-maintenance long term?
Yes. A quality artificial lawn needs no mowing, watering or feeding, and stays mud-free and green year round. Occasional brushing and a rinse is all it takes, which makes it ideal for busy households and shaded Dublin gardens where natural grass struggles.
Is outdoor porcelain tiling suitable for the Irish climate?
It’s one of the best surfaces for Irish weather. Outdoor porcelain is frost-proof, slip-resistant and non-porous, so it doesn’t absorb water, stain or grow moss the way natural stone can. It keeps its colour and finish for decades with minimal cleaning.
How long does a garden transformation like this take?
A full multi-tier redesign typically runs over a few weeks depending on the groundworks, weather and materials involved. We agree a clear schedule before we start so you always know what’s happening on site.
